Chapter Fifteen

Stasia

My mom’s text was brief, but I suppose she wanted to make sure no one knew where I was going.

Mom: Ana, it’s Mom. I have a burner. Meet Dad and me where I used to work.

Niko just came back, and I don’t want to see him. I need to get out of the house without him knowing. There’s no way he would take me, and there’s absolutely no chance in hell he’d let me go alone. I know he only wants his family to guard me. He made that plenty clear.

“Hi. I asked Niko, who asked Maksim, if I can go for a walk. They both said yes as long as I have two guards.”

I’m lying to the guards standing in the driveway. I’m sure Niko will go berserk when he finds out what I’m about to do. I honestly feel bad for what might happen to them. I don’t think Niko will go as far as taking them to whatever place they use, but he’s going to be pissed. I figure if I say that Niko and Maksim want me to have two guards, that’s more plausible, since I’m sure they’ve made it clear to all the guards that only they or their brothers and cousins can guard me.

“I should check, Ms. Antonov.”

“Maksim and his brothers just went into a meeting. They don’t want to be disturbed. It doesn’t have to be a long walk. I’m just bored, and it’s such a nice day.”

It’s fucking humid as hell, and the hair is already sticking to my neck. But I need out. The men look at each other, and two step forward. Once we’re on the sidewalk, they keep a discreet distance, but they’re only a few steps behind. I try not to rush, but I want to get to the subway station now. It only takes a few more minutes. I can’t look back to see how close they are, so I’m assuming I can make it. I have my subway card in hand. When I get even with the steps down to the platforms, I veer right, and bolt down them.

“’Scuse me.’Scuse me.”

I’m lucky I’m so fucking thin. Usually, I hate it. I love to run, but I can’t keep any weight on. I feel like a ’tween standing next to most of my friends. But right now, it’s saving my ass. I can squeeze between people. As I turn sideways to get around a heavy-set man, I can see my guards barreling down the stairs. They’re large enough to make people want to move. But there’s not enough room for them to pass easily. I blow through the turnstile as I pass my subway card over the reader. When I get to the platform, the announcer is warning the doors are about to close. I glance up and see it’s the F train. It’s the one I want. I’d be fucked if it were the E. I barely make it onto the car before the doors trap me.
